MLS Match Day 4 Recap

Match Day 4 was highlighted by a hat trick from Petar Musa, a 6-1 drubbing by the New England Revolution, and another touchdown by Vancouver, whose +13 goal differential is the best in MLS history through four games.

Sporting KC picked up its first win of the Raphael Wicky era with a 2-1 showing on the road against the LA Galaxy. We’re slowly starting to see the initial pieces of a long rebuild in KC. Dejan Joveljic had a goal against his former club, and KC’s new midfielder Lasse Berg Johnsen was phenomenal all night, scoring the winner on his debut. The Galaxy were missing two of their DPs, but that’s a bad loss at home against an inferior team.

NYCFC beat the Colorado Rapids 3-1 and now sit atop the Eastern Conference. Their 11 goals scored are tied with San Diego for the second most in the league behind Vancouver’s 14. Saturday’s win was fueled by a brace from Nico Fernandez, who now has four goals on the year. The Pigeons are for real, folks.

Atlanta United got its first home win in 290 days, beating the Philadelphia Union 3-1. Miguel Almiron had a hat trick of assists. Their second goal was a beautiful team goal. Their third goal was a counterattack where Emmanuel Latte Lath, Miguel Almiron, and Alexey Miranchuck all played a part. Finally, some big impact from the DPs! Philly is still winless with only two goals to account for on the year.

The Houston Dynamo beat the Portland Timbers 3-2 in the 105th minute of the game. Jack McGlynn delivered a MOON ball assist to put Mateusz Bogusz in behind the defense for the winner. Bogusz and Guilherme, Houston’s two new DPs, both finished with a goal and an assist. Portland’s struggles continue, although they were missing several starters. But they were up a man and still let the game slip out of their hands.

Nashville went into Columbus with a heavily rotated starting lineup and came away with three points. Second-half substitutes Hany Mukhtar and Christian Espinoza combined for the winner, with Espinoza breaking a few ankles in the process. His playmaking ability is exactly what this team needed to be less reliant on their other two DPs in the attack. Nashville has also allowed just two goals in seven matches in all comps this year. They’re good! Their second leg CCC clash against Inter Miami is tonight 🍿

Columbus, on the other hand, still doesn’t have a win to show for and has been held scoreless in back-to-back home games.
