MLS Offseason Moves

Charlotte FC is set to sign USMNT midfielder Luca de la Torre from Celtic de Vigo on a permanent deal. The 27-year-old made 37 appearances on loan with San Diego last season. De la Torre will add another ball progressing option to Charlotte’s midfield.

The rich get richer. LAFC is acquiring winger Jacob Shaffelburg from Nashville SC for $1M GAM plus a sell-on percentage. I think it’s a fantastic signing for LA. His speed will fit in perfectly with Bouanga, Son, and LAFC’s transition-heavy style of play, and he’ll provide more attacking depth if either of those two were to miss time. My goodness, this attack will be scary. It’s a big loss for Nashville, which could be losing Sam Surridge as well. Ben Jacobs reported that Wolves are considering a January move for the striker.

DC United is nearing a club record deal for forward Louis Munteanu from CFR Cluj of the Romanian league. The deal would be around $7M with add-ons that could make it $10M. The 23-year-old would be DC’s second designated player alongside Tai Baribo. The two will form an entirely new look attack for DC. Here’s a highlight video of what Munteanu brings to the team.

The Columbus Crew is narrowing its search down for its next skipper. Tom Bogert reported on Monday that Russell Martin is among the finalists. The 39-year-old was most recently with Rangers, where he was sacked after 4 months in charge. Before that, he led Southampton to promotion to the Premier League in 2023/24. If he indeed becomes Nancy’s replacement, he will have big shoes to fill.

Atlanta United is finalizing a deal to shore up its defense with Argentine center back Tomas Jacobs from Nexaca. They’ll pay around $5M for the 21-year-old who will join as a U22 Initiative signing. The Five Stripes allowed 63 goals last season, tied for the 4th most in MLS.
