MLS Offseason Moves

Preseason kicked off for several teams this week. Teams are putting the finishing touches on their rosters. Here’s what happened over the past week.

Nashville SC made one of the biggest free agent signings of the offseason, inking Christian Espinoza to a new deal. The 30-year-old will be Nashville’s 3rd designated player, and he leaves San Jose as their all-time assists leader (83). Several MLS teams, including the Portland Timbers, were very interested in signing him, but Nashville prevailed. I love this fit for BJ Callaghan. He needed a third goal-scoring option after Surridge and Mukhtar accounted for 70% of Nashville’s goals last season.

Minnesota United has lost its head coach. Tom Bogert reported on Thursday that Eric Ramsay will leave the club to become the head coach of West Brom in the English Championship. That’s a massive loss for the Loons. In his two years in charge, Ramsay has taken Minnesota to the semifinals of both MLS Cup and US Open Cup. He’s one of the best young coaches in MLS. Cam Knowles, who was the interim head coach before Ramsay and an assistant under him, will replace him.

St. Louis City SC is finalizing a deal to acquire Daniel Edelman from the New York Red Bulls. The fee will be around $700k in GAM for the talented 22-year-old who made 118 first-team appearances for the Red Bulls.

San Diego FC sporting director Tyler Heaps said in a press conference on Friday that forward Chucky Lozano is not in their sporting plans for 2026. This is a shock. Lozano was acquired for $12M a year ago as the expansion team’s premier signing. A year later, he’ll depart. And that’s after playing a significant role in helping the team to the greatest expansion season in league history. One has to believe that Lozano’s suspension at the end of the season for disciplinary reasons had a big role to play in this. It will be fascinating to see who San Diego fills its DP spot with.

The San Jose Earthquakes make one of the biggest signings in recent MLS history, acquiring Timo Werner from RB Leipzig. The German international striker was close to joining the NY Red Bulls this past summer, but will occupy a DP spot with the Earthquakes instead. Werner, 29, has spent most of his career with Leipzig but has also had stints with Chelsea and Tottenham. He has 57 appearances with the German National team, scoring 24 goals. It will be fun to see what Bruce Arena can do with him. Many of you have probably watched him play before, but here are some highlights of the quality he brings to San Jose’s attack. The Quakes still have one more DP spot open too.

Here’s a bit of what you’re missing this week:

  • Goals from Pepi, Scally, McKennie, and Brenden Aaronson

  • A big MLS bid for Josh Sargent

  • Superstars that could come Stateside
