MLS Match Day 3 Recap

The story of Match Day three was the plethora of bangers scored. David Martinez scored a screamer to keep LAFC undefeated (scroll down for goal of the week), Nectarios Triantis scored from deep for Minnesota, Messi chipped the keeper, Eric Iziota scored a blast on his MLS debut for Portland, and both of Real Salt Lake’s teenagers scored golazos (see below).

NYCFC thumped Orlando City 5-0 in their home opener. Maxime Crepeau was shown a red for handling the ball outside the box in the 18th minute, and it was a lopsided affair after that. Keaton Parks bagged a brace, and Maxi Morales had a goal and two assists. Orlando City is 0-3 with a -8 goal differential to start the year. The rug pull that Carlos Coronel pulled on them this offseason is proving costly. And the end seems near for Oscar Pareja.

Vancouver’s trio of USMNT players dominated the Portland Timbers. Brian White (2), Triston Blackmon, and Sebastian Berhalter all scored (goals here). The Whitecaps are good folks; do not underestimate this team. They have everything they need to take home hardware this season. Portland’s only bright spot on the night was Iziota’s rocket.

The San Jose Earthquakes beat the Philadelphia Union 1-0 on the road to hand the Union their 3rd consecutive loss to start the season. It’s the first time the Union has lost three straight to start a season since 2012. They have yet to score a goal from open play as well. Doop fans booed them as the final whistle was blown. As for San Jose, they’re fun and perfect. Literally perfect through three games with 9 points and no goals allowed. And Timo Werner has been awesome. He dissected the defense with a beautiful assist to Ousseni Bouda for the games only goal.

The Colorado Rapids beat the LA Galaxy 4-1 for their second win of the year (goal highlights here). The result would have likely been different had Gabriel Pec not received a red card in the 60th minute. From the start of the second half to Pec’s red card, the Galaxy outshot the Rapids 8-0. But it all fell apart once they went down to 10 men and the Rapids poured it on in the attack, scoring 3 out of their 4 goals in the last 15 minutes of the game.

Real Salt Lake’s youngsters starred once again in their 3-2 win over Atlanta. They ran circles around the Five Stripes to spoil their home opener. Zavier Gozo and Aiden Hezarkhani scored golazos. These kids are must watch TV!

Atlanta United has lost its first three games of a season for the first time in club history. It’s bleak in the ATL. I don’t know where they go from here. A full teardown is not out of the question.
