MLS Offseason Updates

Teams are busy plugging holes and signing stars. Here’s what happened over the past week…

Austin FC had a busy week. They’ve sold DP winger Osman Bukari to Polish side Widzew Lodz for a Polish record fee of $6.5M. It includes a 20% sell-on clause for Austin. Bukari joined the Verde & Black in the summer of 2024 for a fee around $7M and had 6 goals and 10 assists across 50 games in all competitions. I’m a bit surprised Austin almost entirely recouped the fee they paid for him over a year ago. Good on them. They’re also finalizing deals to acquire two other players: left back Joseph Rosales from Minnesota United for $1.5M GAM and winger Jayden Nelson from the Vancouver Whitecaps for $1.25M in GAM plus the 17th overall pick in last week’s SuperDraft.

Inter Miami has signed goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair as a free agent. The 28-year-old MLS Goalkeeper of the Year will join the reigning MLS Cup Champions. Minnesota United reportedly offered him a salary of over $1M/year, making him one of the highest-paid keepers in MLS, but he turned it down for less money to join Miami.

DC United has signed free agent goalkeeper Sean Johnson. The 36-year-old made 111 saves last season with Toronto, the 5th most in MLS. The veteran still has plenty left in the tank.

Minnesota United is nearing a deal to acquire goalkeeper Drake Callender from Charlotte FC. The terms of the deal are yet to be announced, but it’s a good move for both teams. Callender is absolutely a starter in this league and will provide a quality shot stopper for the Loons.

FC Dallas is finalizing a deal for Swedish wingback Herman Johansson from Mjallby AIF of the Swedish first division. The 28-year-old is a talented player who had 7 goals and 8 assists in 30 matches last season. The fee is reportedly around $1M plus bonuses. He made his debut with the Swedish National team last month and will give Dallas the boost they need in the final third.

Here are a couple of things you’re missing this week:

  • Sergino Dest assists Ricardo Pepi

  • A big offseason overhaul for the Rapids (including a name change?!)

  • An incredible free-kick goal in Belgium from a USYNT player you’ve never heard of

  • And Robert Lewandowski to the Chicago Fire rumors
