MLS Match Day 8 Recap
Real Salt Lake got a big 4-2 conference win over San Diego FC to go six straight unbeaten. Diego Luna had a goal (off an egregious keeper mistake) and two assists, and Sergi Solans scored a brace. Zavier Gozo also picked up a great assist for his third of the year. This attack is fun to watch every week. Meanwhile, San Diego is winless in their last five. The sophomore slump is real.
The Seattle Sounders beat St. Louis City SC 4-1 behind a first-half brace from Christian Roldan. The Sounders are unbeaten at home in their last 18 matches dating back to last year. Unfortunately, they were ousted on aggregate from the Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinals last week, but now they’ll be able to focus fully on league play.
FC Cincinnati and the Chicago Fire played to a 3-3 draw. Cincy only has two wins on the year, which were against Atlanta and Montreal, so uh… there’s definitely reason to panic here. It’s interesting, though, that their best offensive game came without Kevin Denkey, who was suspended. It’s also worth noting that they did this against Chris Brady, who’s been the best keeper in MLS this season. Per American Soccer Analysis, Brady is having the best shot-stopping season through eight games in MLS history. I think he ends up being the third keeper on the World Cup squad.
The San Jose Earthquakes beat LAFC 4-1 to continue their best start in club history. They’ve now beaten last season’s three best teams from the Western Conference (Vancouver, San Diego, and LAFC) and are the second team in MLS history to win their first four road games to start a season. This team is for real. Timo Werner scored his first MLS goal and added an assist. As for LAFC, it seems the schedule congestion caught up to them, but they’ll be just fine.
Inter Miami beat the Colorado Rapids 3-2 in front of 75,824 fans, the second-largest attendance in MLS history. However, they were largely outplayed by the home team. Miami had just 39% of possession, the lowest in a game in the Messi era. But as usual, Messi was the difference maker, scoring a wonderful winner.
Fabrizio Romano reported that Inter Miami is closely monitoring Cristiano Ronaldo’s situation at Al Nassr. Could you imagine?? 👀
