MLS Match Day 1 Recap

We’re backkkk.

LAFC thumped Inter Miami 3-0 in front of the largest opening day crowd in MLS history. 75,673 packed the Coliseum to witness the two MLS giants clash. It was also the second-largest crowd in MLS history. Goals from David Martinez, Denis Bouanga, and Nathan Ordaz did the job. Denis Bouanga generated 2.11 expected goals and .85 expected assists on his own. He was unstoppable all night. Lionel Messi was visibly frustrated after the game and had to be pulled back by Luis Suarez. It was first reported that he tried to enter the referee’s locker room, but that report has been refuted as false. Regardless, what a statement win for LAFC.

Another trio of lopsided affairs highlighted week one. Nashville cruised to a 4-1 win over the Revolution behind two goals from Sam Surridge and one from Hany Mukhtar. San Jose beat Sporting KC 3-0, and San Diego walloped Montreal 5-0 (all 5 goals here). None of these results is too surprising, as those three teams are clearly better than their opponents.

Michael Bradley was not afraid to play the kids on his debut with the New York Red Bulls. They became the first team in MLS history to start three players aged 17 or younger, with Matthew Dos Santos (17), Adri Mehmeti (16), and Julian Hall (17) all getting the nod. Not only did they start, but they were the difference makers. Julian Hall had a first-half brace with his second goal assisted by Mehmeti. Watch Mehmeti’s full highlights from the game. This kid looks special.

FC Dallas picked up a 3-2 win at home against Toronto. It was their star man, Petar Musa, who scored a brace, including the game-winner. His wingman, Logan Farrington, assisted that winner and provided a goal of his own. Man, if this team finds a real #10 to be the creator behind these two, they can be a huge threat this year. As for Toronto, they don’t have a full squad yet, so we’ll hold off judgment, but it looks like we thought it would.

The Portland Timbers snatched a 3-2 win at home against the Columbus Crew. Diego Chara became the first MLS player to reach 400 appearances with one club. What a legend. Ariel Lassiter picked up the scraps to secure three points in the 88th minute. Columbus looked lackluster aside from a couple of good moments from their two DPs, including this rocket from Diego Rossi 👇️.
