MLS Match Day 6 Recap
LAFC thrashed Orlando City 6-0. Son Heung-min had four assists in the first half, three of which were to Denis Bouanga, who scored a hat trick in 30 minutes. This game was over before it began. LAFC is the last unbeaten team and has a league-leading +14 goal differential while not allowing a single goal in league play. Orlando City looks historically bad. 23 goals allowed on the year. The next closest team is Montreal with 17.
FC Dallas beat DC United 4-0 for their second-largest road win in club history. Logan Farrington had another superb first touch and finished off a moon ball from Ramiro. Patrickson Delgado added a free kick, and of course, Petar Musa scored. This game was the third time this season Dallas had more than 49% of possession, a mark they rarely hit without Lucho Acosta last year. They’re really putting it all together. Eric Quill has done a fantastic job.
The NY RedBulls got back on track, getting their signature win of the year, beating FC Cincinnati 4-2. Once again, Julian Hall found himself on the score sheet. He became the youngest player in league history to score 5 or more goals in the first 6 matches of the season. Emil Forsberg added a gorgeous free-kick. Cincy has conceded 18 goals in its last four games in all competitions.
The San Jose Earthquakes are giving LAFC a run for their money for the best team in California. They beat San Diego 3-0. The Quakes only had 40% of possession, but outshot San Diego 24-4. Niko Tsakiris scored his first goal of the season, a left-footed blast, then buried a penalty, and had 7 chances created. USMNT fans need to pay attention to this 20-year-old. He will be a part of the National team sooner or later.
Toronto FC beat the Colorado Rapids 3-2 in one of the wildest games of the season (full highlights here). It included three red cards, a goal from Paxten Aaronson, Josh Sargent’s first goal for Toronto, and a couple of massive blunders from Zack Steffen. It was a throwback MLS bout. The Rapids continue to be the most physical team in MLS, and they’re committed to playing that way. Sometimes it bites you in the butt, though.
The Columbus Crew picked up their first win of the year, beating Atlanta United 3-1 on the road. Wessam Abou Ali had a brace, including this golazo. Max Arfsten added a goal and an assist. Abou Ali now has five goals and one assist in MLS play. Is it a sign of life for the Crew, or did they just play Atlanta?
