MLS Offseason Updates

MLS free agency officially got underway last week. Teams are already making big moves. Here’s what’s gone down so far.

DC United has found its Christian Benteke replacement. They acquired striker Tai Baribo from the rival Philadelphia Union in a cash transfer worth around $4M. He’ll be a designated player in DC.

Tai Baribo isn’t the only key player the Union is losing. The LA Galaxy have acquired former MLS Defender of the Year Jakob Glesnes from the Union for $1.1M GAM upfront plus another $1.1M in GAM add-ons. We’ve been here before with the Union. Before this past season, they sold Jack McGlynn to the Houston Dynamo, and everyone thought their season was doomed. Then they won the Supporters Shield. They’re not afraid to dispose of expensive talent because they believe in their ability to replace them with younger, cheaper players. They’ve earned the right not to be doubted. As for the Galaxy, they fill a big need at center back with one of the league’s best defenders.

San Diego FC is acquiring forward Lewis Morgan from the NY Red Bulls. The Red Bulls will get an MLS SuperDraft pick as part of the compensation, along with some GAM. They’ve officially unveiled Michael Bradley as their new skipper and also completed the acquisition of Cade Cowell from Chivas Guadalajara. It’s a 1-year loan with the option to buy.

The Colorado Rapids are busy. They’re finalizing a deal to acquire winger Dante Sealy from CF Montreal for around $2M GAM. The Rapids are also set to name Tottenham assistant Matt Wells as their next head coach. The 37-year-old, who works under Thomas Frank for the North London club, will take on his first head coaching role in Colorado.

St. Louis City is set to name Yoann Damet as their next head coach. The 35-year-old was an assistant under Wilfried Nancy in Columbus and has also had stints with FC Cincinnati and the LA Galaxy.

Toronto FC is signing free agent center back Walker Zimmerman. The 32-year-old will be the defensive anchor to help kickstart a new era in Toronto under Robin Fraser. Zimmerman will not occupy a DP spot.

Inter Miami have found their Jordi Alba replacement in another Spanish left back, Sergio Reguilon. The 29-year-old, most recently with Tottenham, has also had stints with Manchester United and Real Madrid. Here’s a little sneak peek of what he’ll offer Miami…
