Match Week 11 Recap

Western Conference Upset

Josh Wolff’s crew stymied the potent Galaxy attack Saturday afternoon for the 4th win in their last 5. LA had 7 more shots and 6 more chances created but Austin gave them a dose of their own medicine with not one but two quick counterattacking goals.

I’m still not convinced Austin is a true Western Conference contender but they’ve done enough to prove they’ll be in the playoff picture.

Benteke is Rolling

Are D.C. United too reliant on the Big Belgian? Yup. Is that sustainable? Nope. They’ll have to figure out ways to create chances without him but for now it’s getting results when they need them most.

We can’t figure out Seattle. They lost to D.C. 2-1 and had 6 points through 9 games, making it the worst start in club history but then beat Philadelphia 3-2 on the road last night (rescheduled). They have 4 red cards already this season — ugly and undisciplined from a team that is usually the opposite. Overall a bad first quarter of the season but they can play well when they want to.

More Messi Magic

We try hard not to make this newsletter revolve around the Miami Messiah and we think we do a good job at that but man does he make it hard on us. In front of a New England Revolution club record 65,612 Messi had a brace and an assist to become the first player in league history with multiple goal contributions in 5 straight games.

He’s overtaken the Golden Boot race from Chicho with 9 goals and 7 assists in 3 fewer games.

Mysterious Case of Emanuel Reynoso

Minnesota United fans know this story all to well. Their DP and club record signing is nowhere to be seen and is refusing to return to the US from his home country of Argentina.

Here’s what happened:

The issues started in 2023 when Reynoso didn’t show up for preseason and arrived four months late resulting in almost half of Minnesota’s games missed. Family and personal issues were the reason he gave and he apologized to the entire team for his absence.

With a new regime in place in 2024 Reynoso was given a second chance that he’s now botched. Due to injury and a green card meeting, he’s only appeared in one game this season. He missed his March 25th green card appointment in Argentina and has missed multiple scheduled team flights back including this past weekend. It’s a wild story.

The team is moving in a new direction and are doing everything they can to transfer him this summer. Team Captain Michael Boxall said, “I think we’ve all kind of moved on. I don’t even know if anyone actually knows what the situation is.”

The Loons sit 4th in the Western Conference and seem to have found a gem in Nigerian, Tani Oluwaseyi.

Euro Yanks Update

Big week for our boys across the pond, with a few facing off against each other.

Weston Mckennie and Tim Weah faced off against Pulisic and Musah with all 4 players featuring in the game that ended 0-0. It’s interesting to see Weah as an outside back(he did well against a really good Rafael Leao), but I don’t see Berhalter moving him there in the future.

After Dest’s recent injury, PSV wore No.8 shirts before their match over the weekend in honor of Dest. They went on to win 8-0 with USMNT midfielder Malik Tillman slotting 2 goals and 1 assist. It’s good to see his club teammates rally around him as he’s been difficult to deal with in a US jersey at times.

In England, Chris Richards took on Antonee Robinson in a game that ended 1-1. Both have had good defensive seasons, Robinson has been superb though, and is drawing interest from a lot of top clubs. Look at his comparison to fellow left-back, Luke Shaw.

Chucky Time

Tom Bogert dropped one of his patented BOMBS on Monday. MLS’s 30th franchise, San Diego FC, who begin play next year are in serious talks with Mexican Winger Chucky Lozano.

They’re following the LAFC route of signing a premier Mexican player to begin their inaugural season. And why not? It worked out brilliantly for LA.

The 28 year-old has 6 goals and 3 assists in 21 appearances for PSV Eindhoven this season who all but have the Eredivisie Title locked up.

The fee would reportedly be $12M and immediately make Chucky one of MLS’s premier players. Look at all that green 👇️

Goal of the Week

It felt like he’d been MIA all season. Until…

Meme of the Week

I kind of feel bad for meme’ing SKC because it’s hard not to agree with Head Coach Peter Vermes regarding an egregious offside that VAR didn’t pickup— but hey it was the best meme I found this week. Here’s his full outburst to the media.
